Missed out on going to ULearn? Not to worry, here is a video of keynote, Prof Stephen Heppell.
Stephen Heppell talks about his personal journey through the use of technologies in learning, learning spaces and his vision for the future. He speaks persuasively about the wasted opportunities for mobile learning in our classrooms, the need to be questioning educational norms, the power of distant learning spaces, and the implications of living in an open world; a "world of no secrets".
I thought this video about keeping yourself safe online, for 11 to 16 year olds, was very well done. It has the right tone to make kids think without being too over the top scary. ne to make kids think without being too over the top scary.
Be patient, after about 8 mins Jill begins to give lots of good practical ideas.
One idea I like is the generating of blogging comments as a reading and writing activity. We are a large school this is something we could do quite effectively just amongst our classes.
Another is a writing activity. Emailing a piece of writing to family and friends for feedback.
"A brief but informative booklet has just been released by BECTA titled Messages from Evidence: Assessment using technology. A quick read of only 7 pages, the booklet works from the premise that technology has an important role to play in facilitating assessment for learning. For instance, technology can be used to administer a test and then link each learner to a suitable learning task, based on test results. (This is a key part of the design of e-asTTle, and other programmes such as Mathletics.) Also, using technology can help learners assess" (D Wenmoth, http://blog.core-ed.net/derek/).
